Landstar announced the winners of two annual safety awards at its 2025 Agent Convention in April. The awards were the Landstar Safety Officer (LSO) of the Year and the Mutual Understanding of Safety Together (M.U.S.T.) Customer of the Year.
Lenny Dembrosky was named Landstar’s 2024 Safety Officer of the Year at the company’s annual event for independent Landstar agents. Landstar requires each of the 1,050 freight agencies to name an individual responsible for upholding Landstar’s safety-first culture at the agency. Each month, Landstar names one Landstar Safety Officer of the Month, from which the Landstar Safety Officer of the Year is selected.
“As the designated LSO, and independent freight agent who owns and operates Sandbear Express, Lenny has led his agency team in promoting safe, secure and compliant driving, and supporting customer safety initiatives at the agency level,” says Landstar Transportation Logistics Vice President and Chief Safety and Operations Officer Matt Miller. “Lenny fosters a culture of safety throughout the Landstar network of agents and truck owner-operators.”
In 2024, Dembrosky and his agency team in Riverview, Michigan, lead the organization of an annual safety meeting in Flint for area LSOs and independent Landstar business capacity owners (BCOs), Landstar’s term for independent truck owner-operators leased to a Landstar motor carrier. The result was boosted attendance and interaction between BCOs and agents on a regional level.
Dembrosky consistently utilizes Landstar initiatives such as the Complete and Accurate Dispatch program, and actively participates in Landstar’s monthly Safety Thursday Conference Calls when independent agents, owner-operators, customers, employees and representatives from state and federal regulatory agencies discuss safety topics.
A collaboration between Landstar and its customers, Landstar’s Mutual Understanding of Safety Together, or M.U.S.T., program involves an extensive on-site review of a customer’s facility, followed by discussion and analysis of loading, unloading and securement, in addition to other safety practices.
At its 2025 Agent Convention, Landstar announced ATW of Addison, Texas, as its 2024 Overall Landstar M.U.S.T. Customer of the Year. Landstar Vice President of Safety and Compliance Shelly Seaton announced the award. Also recognized was LSO and independent Landstar Agent Lisa Nestor who owns Success Transportation, the agency that works with ATW.
Upon a 2024 visit to ATW’s Mount Pleasant, Texas, facility, Landstar safety team members witnessed the company’s procedure for securing loads of ATW utility trailers. ATW demonstrated impressive practices for the safe transport of its trailers, including requirements for height measurements, secure cargo straps, strap protection and accurate overhang to ensure a smooth haul.
“This relationship demonstrates a clear and consistent commitment by the customer to safety, securement and open lines of communication, earning Landstar’s Overall M.U.S.T. Customer of the Year Award,” said Seaton at the award presentation.
Landstar’s independent agents enjoy the administrative, sales and technological support of a financially secure industry leader, along with the freedom that comes with owning your own business.
