March 7, 2001 Jacksonville, FL (LSTR:NASDAQ) - Landstar System, Inc., a safety-first transportation and information services company, announced today the opening of its multi-purpose trailer interchange facility in Laredo, Texas, the city often referred to as the gateway into Mexico, Central and South America. The 11-acre drop yard site includes offices for several Landstar agents, cross-docks for transloading, interchange inspection facilities, as well as complete amenities for the independent business capacity owners (BCO) who supply the equipment used to haul Landstar freight.
Landstar's facility, a first-of-its-kind for one of the nation's largest transportation companies, has been two-and-a-half years in the making. "The opening of our Laredo facility is a signal of our interest in Mexico," said Landstar President, Chairman and CEO Jeff Crowe. "Laredo is at the center of the primary trade route connecting Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. We're excited about the new opportunities in this growing trade corridor."
Laredo sits at the doorstep of Mexico's burgeoning industrial complex and is the only city to operate international bridges between two Mexican states. Truck trailer traffic has increased from approximately 2,500 trailers a day across the city's four bridges to somewhere between 6,000 and 8,000 trailers each day. Daily trailer traffic is projected to reach 14,000 in five years. The city recognizes Mexico's economic reforms and increased trade with the U.S. as major factors in Laredo's emergence as the fastest growing city in the country and a central stage for future transportation growth.
With its new facility, Landstar will pool its capacity in one location and enhance the maintenance of equipment through mandatory in and outbound inspections. Eight of the facility's 11 acres are paved and have security-lighted enclosures, an eight-bay open cross-dock, and a lounge for Landstar business capacity owners. The lounge's amenities include his and her showers, washer-dryer and kitchen facilities and direct TV. The lounge will also provide Landstar BCOs with computer access to posted loads on the Landstar website along with hookups for their personal laptops. All facilities at the drop yard and in the lounge will be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Several of Landstar's independent sales agents operating in the Laredo area will relocate to the new facility. The company's Mexico Carrier Group Trailer Control offices will also be on site.
