Jacksonville, FL - Ask the Birmingham Traffic and Transportation Club's new president for the secret to her success, and she'll tell you it's flexibility. "It's all about how quickly you adapt to change," Lisa Thompson says. She says that philosophy has turned her into one of Landstar System's most productive, awarded agents - and she'll use it in her latest role as president of the influential traffic club.
In her year as president, Thompson says she'll develop a website, leading the club onto the Information Superhighway. "We'll continue our traditional ways of communicating with our members, but we need to take advantage of technology and get with it." Her goals also include an increase in membership and a broadening of the membership base.
The 400-plus member club is one of the largest traffic clubs in the nation, bringing together manufacturers in the southeastern United States with the trucking and rail companies that ship their goods. Thompson's selection was recognized at the club's recent annual meeting in Birmingham, Alabama.
"Leading the Birmingham Traffic and Transportation Club is an important position, and Lisa has worked long and hard to earn the presidency," said Landstar Logistics President Jim Hertwig. "It takes enthusiasm, commitment and experience to guide this large group of shippers and transportation providers. We're very proud of her."
Thompson joined the club in 1981 and has had plenty of encouragement on the road that led to her election to the highest post in the transportation organization. Her father, Al Stevens, was club president in 1972. In 1997, her business partner, Renee Covington, served as president and was the first woman elected to the office. Thompson's administration marks the second time a woman has been elected to the post.
"We call the group a social club, but it's much more than that," Thompson said. "It gives us opportunities to meet the presidents of the companies we want to work with - to network our services. It's interesting because these carriers in the club are technically competitors, but we find ways to work together so that we can all be more successful."
