Intersection and right-hand turn accidents are often the result of miscommunication between drivers or drivers wandering too far into another vehicle’s lane of travel. The right turn “squeeze” is completely avoidable when a commercial operator follows these steps:
- Get in the proper lane well ahead of turning and signal your intent.
- Keep the rear of the trailer close enough to the right curb to keep other vehicles
out.
- When clear, turn the wheel, making your turn at no more than 3 mph.
- Turn without crossing the center line of the street you are leaving and, if possible,
not into the opposing traffic lanes of the road you are entering.
Left-hand turns can be tricky with traffic in the intersection and when multiple turn lanes are available.
- Get in the proper lane well ahead of turning and signal your intent.
- Keep the front wheels pointed straight and let oncoming traffic clear the intersection
or commit to the light. Yield to pedestrians.
- Don’t let your wheels pass over the center line when you turn.
- If there are two left-turning lanes, always take the right-hand turn lane. Do
not start the turn in the inside lane because you may have to swing right to make
the turn, making it difficult for drivers on your right to see you.
Always approach an intersection with caution. Expect the unexpected and use extra care as you encounter a yellow light by taking your foot off the accelerator and preparing to apply the brakes.
